Introduction of cultivation methods of tiger thorn

Tiger Thorn Plum, also known as Tiehai, is a unique and resilient plant native to Madagascar and parts of Africa. It thrives in warm, sunny environments and is highly tolerant of both heat and cold. For optimal growth, it should be planted in loose, well-draining humus soil, with winter temperatures not dropping below 12°C. Propagation is most commonly done through cuttings, which can be taken throughout the growing season but are most successful between May and June. Select mature branches from the previous year, cut them into 6–10 cm sections, and wash off the white milky sap with warm water. Then, place the cuttings in a sand bed, keeping the environment slightly dry. Roots usually develop within about 30 days. When grown in pots, it's best to repot every spring. Watering should be moderate—too much water can lead to root rot. During the summer, when the plant requires more moisture, fertilize once a month. In winter, when temperatures drop and the plant enters dormancy, keep the soil dry. Maintain a moderate level of soil moisture during the flowering period, which can last from March to December. If the room temperature stays above 15°C during winter, the plant can continue blooming. Tiger Thorn Plum grows slowly, adding only about 10 cm in height each year, but it has a long lifespan—potted plants can live over 30 years. It flowers for an extended period, especially under favorable light and temperature conditions. The plant’s twigs tend to grow long and unbranched, leading to fewer flowers and a messy appearance. To encourage new growth and more blooms, prune the tips regularly. This practice typically results in two new branches. Its root system is strong, though the root hairs are sparse. The plant prefers warm conditions, with ideal daytime temperatures around 22°C and nighttime temperatures around 15°C. Keeping it in a greenhouse at 15–20°C allows for year-round blooming. When temperatures drop to 10°C, the leaves may enter a semi-dormant state, and the plant will resume growth in the following spring. Tiger Thorn Plum requires plenty of sunlight before flowering; without enough light, the flowers may appear dull and fail to bloom. Ensure good air circulation to prevent disease. For fertilization, use a base fertilizer like hoof horn during the growing season, applying it every two weeks. Stop fertilizing after early autumn and avoid oily fertilizers to prevent root damage. This plant is drought-tolerant. Water moderately in spring and autumn, and water daily during summer. Avoid watering in rainy seasons and do not keep the soil overly moist in winter. During the flowering period, control watering to prevent root rot. From May to July, the plant is easiest to propagate. Choose thick, healthy branches about 10–15 cm long. Allow the cut ends to dry, then dust them with ash and let them dry in the shade for 2–3 days before planting in plain sand. Water sparingly, only when the pot feels slightly dry. Rooting usually takes 50–60 days. Cutting propagation is very easy and can be done throughout the growing season. Use loose, well-draining humus soil, and repot every spring. Water more frequently during summer and autumn. If the temperature remains above 15°C in winter or spring, the plant can bloom continuously. Prolonged shade can prevent blooming. If the branches become too dense, prune them before new leaves appear in spring to maintain a neat shape.
