Home building materials do not have absolute formaldehyde-free products

In recent days, consumer associations from 28 provinces and cities conducted a comparative test on the environmental performance of flooring and panels. The results revealed that 35 samples of floors and boards had a formaldehyde emission compliance rate of 97.14%. The Provincial Consumer Association has reminded consumers that no home building materials are completely free of formaldehyde, as the raw materials themselves often contain this chemical. Formaldehyde is often regarded as an invisible threat in home improvement projects. To ensure a fair and unbiased comparison, the organizers anonymously purchased 35 samples of popular brands in the market, including 15 laminate floors, 13 engineered wood floors, and 7 panels. These samples were then sent to the National Furniture and Indoor Environment Quality Supervision and Inspection Center for testing. The results showed that one sample from Beijing North Tianhongji Building Materials Co., Ltd. exceeded the national standard of 1.5 mg/l for formaldehyde emissions, while all other samples met the required standards. Although most of the tested samples met the national mandatory standards, there are still concerns. Due to inconsistencies in the standards for flooring and panels in China, and because some companies conduct their own inspections, certain products have been labeled with "low on high" standards, misleading consumers by advertising "low formaldehyde content." Among the 15 tested laminate flooring samples, 14 were qualified, but only two met the E0 standard (formaldehyde emission ≤ 0.5 mg/l), which is considered more environmentally friendly. The E1 standard allows for formaldehyde emissions between 0.5–1.5 mg/l, suitable for indoor use. Out of the 14 qualified samples, four exceeded 1 mg/l, while the rest ranged between 0.7–0.9 mg/l. In response to these findings, 29 consumer rights protection organizations have called on the relevant standard-setting departments to unify detection methods, regulate standards, and enhance environmental protection requirements. Currently, many products on the market claim to be "formaldehyde-free." However, the Provincial Consumer Association reminds consumers that no such absolute "formaldehyde-free" products exist, as formaldehyde is naturally present in the raw materials of building materials. When purchasing green products, it's essential to check whether formaldehyde-free adhesives are used. Additionally, consumers should avoid over-decorating and instead choose high-quality, eco-friendly flooring, panels, and furniture. During the renovation process, it’s also important to control the total amount of panels used and avoid overcrowding rooms with too much furniture.
