Structure Elucidation of Novel Luminous Non-toxic Rare Earth Compounds

An international research team of scientists from China, Japan and Russia used rare earth metal oxides to synthesize new crystalline materials and elucidated the structure and properties of new materials. The relevant research results were published in the British Journal of European Chemistry. X-ray analysis shows that the material is a new compound with a unique spectrum that can be used in the future to manufacture electronic devices such as monitors.

Previously, researchers from China's Bohai University and Northeastern University combined rare earth nitrates with sulfate and ammonium hydrates to synthesize a new compound. After that, researchers from China, Japan and Russia formed an international team to jointly determine the crystal structure of the new compound. The new compound has a unique spectrum compared to other discovered luminescent rare earth compounds.

Maxim Morokieev, an X-ray structural analysis expert at the Institute of Physics of the Siberian Federal University and the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, confirmed through research that the new compound is a completely new substance in structure.

Molokiev said that the main difficulty in analyzing the structure of the compound is that one needs to obtain a single crystal of the new compound, and the second is that the analysis of the single crystal structure of the powdered material by X-ray diffraction is more complicated than the analysis of other materials. . By analyzing the X-ray images, Molokyev found that the new phosphor consists of tetrahedron sulfate and rare earth ions surrounding oxygen atoms, and the sulfur oxide tetrahedrons are disorderly arranged.

The greatest feature of this new compound is that it synthesizes phosphors when heated to 800 degrees Celsius, and that only water is produced during the synthesis process, which is currently produced when similar phosphors are produced. Russian scientists believe that this new compound will have broad application prospects in the production of displays and other electronic devices in the future, and will effectively reduce the harm to the surrounding environment when the phosphor is synthesized.
