British developed purple transgenic tomatoes can be anti-cancer anti-diabetes
Genetically modified foods have long been a topic of debate. To change the public's negative perception, British scientists have been working on a special type of purple tomato. This genetically modified variety contains high levels of anthocyanins, a powerful antioxidant known for its ability to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and offer other health benefits.
Since 2014, researchers in the UK have been focusing on this project, aiming to develop a more nutritious and appealing version of the tomato. The purple tomatoes are not only rich in nutrients but have also been successfully cultivated on a large scale in Canada, showing great potential for future use.
Recently, a batch of these tomatoes was processed into 1,200 liters of juice, which was then sent to Novartis in the UK for further scientific evaluation. This step marks an important milestone in the research process, as it allows experts to study the long-term effects of consuming these genetically modified tomatoes.
The project began at the John Innes Research Centre, where scientists led by Professor Martin worked to extract specific genes from snapdragons and insert them into regular tomatoes. This genetic modification enables the tomatoes to produce anthocyanins naturally, giving them their distinctive purple color. These compounds are known for their anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and blood sugar-regulating properties, making them a promising addition to the human diet.
As research continues, the hope is that these purple tomatoes could not only improve public opinion about GM foods but also offer real health benefits to consumers around the world.
