Analysis of the operational status of machine tool industry in the first half of this year
In the first half of 2013, China's machine tool industry continued to face a downward trend that had begun in 2012, largely due to the slowdown in China's economic growth. Although the industry remained in decline, the rate of decrease significantly narrowed, and overall operations showed signs of stabilization. By the end of June, production and sales of metalworking machine tools fell by 10.5% year-on-year, while exports saw a modest increase of 1.7%.
At the same time, new orders for machine tools continued to shrink. According to data from key monitored enterprises, new orders for metalworking machine tools totaled 23.37 billion yuan in the first half of the year, a 6% drop compared to the same period in 2012. The issue of overcapacity became more pronounced, putting further pressure on the sector.
The Chinese machine tool market has undergone significant changes, with two main characteristics emerging: a sharp decline in total demand and an accelerated shift in the structure of demand. In the first half of 2013, China imported $5.26 billion worth of metalworking machines, a 17% decrease from the previous year, indicating weak domestic demand. However, high-end machine tools from Germany, Italy, and the U.S. saw a substantial increase in exports to China, highlighting the growing demand for advanced technology.
