Oilseed deficiency and remedy
Rape is a phosphorus-demanding crop, requiring more than twice the amount of phosphorus compared to cereal crops. When phosphorus is deficient, the plants exhibit stunted growth, delayed leaf development, smaller leaves with a dark green appearance, and a lack of shine. Purple-red spots or patches often appear on the edges of the leaves, while the veins on the petioles and the back of the leaves turn purple-red. The number of pods and the 1000-grain weight significantly decrease, leading to lower oil yields. Hydroponic experiments show that when phosphorus deficiency begins in the early stages, the leaves become small, curled, and unable to stand upright, making it difficult for the plant to produce harvestable grains. At the five-leaf stage, phosphorus deficiency reduces yield by 56% when the phosphorus supply drops to only 0.44% of the normal level. However, if the deficiency occurs at the ten-leaf stage, the yield loss is less severe, at about 27.8% of the normal phosphorus content.
To address phosphorus deficiency during the seedling stage, it is recommended to apply 25 to 30 kg of superphosphate per acre through drilling or watering. The earlier the application, the better the results. If the deficiency is detected later, a 1% superphosphate leaching solution can be sprayed onto the leaves for quick absorption.
