Celery topdressing has tricks
Cultivating celery requires careful and appropriate use of nitrogen fertilizer throughout its growth cycle. A steady supply of nitrogen is essential, and top-dressing should be done using ammonium bicarbonate rather than other forms of nitrogen. It is recommended to apply it in small amounts multiple times—typically 2 to 3 times during the growing season. However, it's important to note that urea should never be used for celery. Applying urea can slow down plant growth, increase cellulose content, lead to early aging, reduce overall quality, and make the vegetable more bitter when consumed. Therefore, urea should be completely avoided throughout the entire growth period.
After applying organic fertilizer, it’s crucial to use fully decomposed and well-fermented materials. This helps improve the quality of the celery by making the stems softer, reducing fiber content, and increasing both yield and marketability. It’s important not to use partially decomposed organic fertilizer as a top dressing, as this can cause root burn and damage the plants.
In addition, maintaining proper levels of micronutrients is vital for healthy celery growth. A deficiency in calcium can lead to "burn heart," a condition where the inner leaves of the celery become necrotic. Boron deficiency, on the other hand, may result in physiological issues such as hollow stalks or cracked petioles. To prevent "burn heart," foliar application of a 0.5% solution of calcium chloride or calcium nitrate is recommended. To address hollow stalks and petiole cracking, you can apply 0.5 to 0.75 kg of borax per acre or use a foliar spray of 0.3% to 0.5% borax solution. These practices ensure healthier, higher-quality celery with improved taste and texture.
