To prevent these problems, careful attention must be given during the design of the cleaning process. One key aspect is the proper design and use of grid screens. These are typically placed at the receiving port and serve as the first line of defense in the cleaning process. Despite their simplicity, they are often overlooked. The grid gap size should be carefully selected based on the material’s physical properties. For instance, for corn, by-products, and rice, a gap of 3 cm is usually sufficient. For oilseeds, a larger gap between 3 cm and 5 cm may be required. It's also essential to maintain consistent screen gaps and regularly remove large debris to ensure effective preliminary screening. Another important consideration is the layout of horizontal conveying machinery. While these systems are cost-effective and efficient, improper placement can lead to frequent breakdowns. A common issue is sending materials directly from the grid screen to the elevator via an auger or scraper, which can cause entanglement with small impurities like hemp ropes or plastic bags. This not only reduces efficiency but can also damage the motor. Therefore, it’s recommended to avoid using horizontal conveyors before primary cleaning and magnetic separation. Instead, materials should be directed straight into the elevator through a slip tube to minimize interference from foreign objects. The primary cleaning cylinder is a critical piece of equipment in the cleaning process. It is responsible for removing contaminants such as hemp ropes, sacks, stones, and mud. Selecting appropriate process parameters is vital for optimal performance. Factors like mesh diameter, adjustable air volume, and production capacity should be carefully considered. The mesh size should match the material’s characteristics, while an adjustable air system helps manage dust. Additionally, the screen’s capacity should be about 30% higher than the previous conveyor’s throughput to avoid bottlenecks. Magnetic separators are also essential in removing metal impurities that can damage high-speed equipment like pulverizers and granulators. There are two main types: permanent magnet cylinders and permanent magnet rollers. The former is compact, energy-efficient, and ideal for fine powders, but requires manual removal of trapped metals. The latter, though more expensive and bulky, is better suited for larger materials like bran or cake and can automatically remove metal contaminants. In smaller feed mills, permanent magnet cylinders are often preferred due to cost and space constraints. Proper placement of magnetic separators is equally important. They should be positioned after the primary cleaning screen and before the pulverizer to protect the mill from metal damage. Another location could be on the granule powder bin to prevent metal particles from entering the granulator. Although less common, placing a magnetic separator on the packing scale can further enhance product quality by capturing any remaining metal impurities. By implementing these design considerations, feed processing plants can significantly reduce equipment downtime, improve safety, and ensure higher-quality final products. Careful planning and attention to detail in each stage of the cleaning process are essential for long-term success in the feed industry.
