Baoding, Hebei strives to be a "solar city"
In recent years, Baoding in Hebei Province has taken significant steps toward becoming a "solar city" as part of China's broader low-carbon development strategy. At a recent national seminar on low-carbon development held in Guiyang, Mayor Ma Yufeng revealed that the city has completed the solar transformation of major traffic intersections, main roads, and all parks and green areas. The goal is to build a fully solar-powered urban environment, positioning Baoding as a model for sustainable living.
Since 2006, Baoding has integrated the concept of "low-carbon" into its urban planning, focusing on developing industries centered around new energy sources. Today, the city has established six key industrial systems covering photovoltaics, wind power, power transmission, energy storage, and automation. With over 200 companies involved in new energy, Baoding has earned the nickname "China Power Valley."
The city has also launched multiple low-carbon demonstration projects, achieving annual energy savings of 165 million kWh, equivalent to 66,000 tons of standard coal and a reduction of 164,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Leveraging the natural terrain of the Taihang Mountains, Baoding has developed the Taihangshan New Energy Demonstration Zone, while utilizing geothermal resources to build a "smoke-free city" in areas like Xiongxi County.
Additionally, the city has actively participated in the National Golden Sun Project, promoting large-scale photovoltaic power generation. Baoding has also focused on low-carbon transportation by converting buses and taxis to gas, implementing the "gasification and security protection" initiative.
Beyond infrastructure, Mayor Ma emphasized the importance of promoting a low-carbon lifestyle among residents. During this year’s World Environment Day on June 5th, Baoding hosted a "Cool China - Low-Carbon Life into the Community" exhibition to raise public awareness.
Looking ahead, Ma Yufeng stated that Baoding will continue to develop green industries such as new energy and cultural tourism, aiming to create a city that blends solar energy with ecological garden features. The city remains committed to accelerating its transition toward a low-carbon future, ensuring sustainable growth for generations to come.
