The price of custom-made curtain accessories is two or three times that of fabrics.
In the bustling Economic Zone, Ms. Yuan recently embarked on a home renovation project and visited a fabric store in the city to choose a set of curtains she loved. She initially thought that the 800 yuan for the fabric would cover most of the cost. However, when the curtains were finally ready to be paid for on January 3rd, the total came to an unexpected 3,000 yuan. After reviewing the list of additional charges from the store owner—such as rings, tracks, and other accessories—Ms. Yuan was shocked. Some of these seemingly minor items ended up costing twice as much as the fabric itself.
During an interview, the reporter discovered that in the curtain industry, accessory costs often exceed those of the fabric. It's a common practice for stores to make most of their profit through these extra items. Many consumers, like Ms. Yuan, feel misled after the fact, having not asked about all the potential fees beforehand. Staff from the Huancui District Consumers Association advised the public to clarify all charges before purchasing and to keep receipts to protect their rights.
"Custom-made curtains usually only ask for cloth money," Ms. Yuan recalled. When she first went to the store, the owner focused on showcasing fabrics and patterns, making her assume that the fabric cost would be the main expense. The price per meter had dropped from 75 to 68 yuan, which made her feel satisfied. The owner mentioned that 6 meters of fabric would be needed for the folds, and she calculated that two curtains would cost around 800 yuan, which she considered reasonable.
After paying a 300-yuan deposit, the owner revealed that additional costs for small accessories were also required. Ms. Yuan assumed they wouldn’t add much, so she didn’t ask further. It wasn’t until the final payment that she realized how much she had been charged for these "minor" items.
The reporter learned that many people share Ms. Yuan’s experience. The final price of finished curtains is often significantly higher than the initial estimate, with the majority of the cost coming from accessories. While customers feel embarrassed when they see the total, they often don’t question it if the charges are clearly listed.
"The price of accessories can be two or three times that of the fabric," said the store owner at a curtain shop on Wenhua Road. He explained that while the fabric might cost between 20 to 80 yuan per meter, the accessories—like rings, tracks, and laces—can quickly add up. For a 3-meter window, the fabric alone could cost around 200 yuan, but the accessories could easily surpass 400 yuan.
When the reporter asked if it was possible to buy just the fabric and handle the rest themselves, the owner replied that they didn’t sell fabric separately. Another store owner, Ms. Zhao, explained that selling only fabric would barely cover costs, so many shops lower the fabric price and make profits through accessories instead.
Some consumers, aware of this industry secret, have started making their own curtains. A netizen named “Love Meter†once bought a decorative book and made her own curtains, saving over 50% compared to store-bought options. She found that even simple items like curtain rings could be purchased at a fraction of the price online or in wholesale markets.
Sun Yulan, a resident of Dongbei Village, also prefers to make her own curtains. Her family’s handmade curtains, complete with delicate laces and bows, may not be as elaborate as those from stores, but they carry a personal touch and save money. “If someone wants to learn, I’d be happy to teach them,†she said.
With rising awareness, more people are choosing to DIY their curtains, not only saving money but also enjoying the creative process.
