Rutile and anatase titanium dioxide powders have distinct characteristics that determine their respective applications. Both rutile and anatase forms exhibit high whiteness in the visible light spectrum, with strong light reflectance. However, their behavior under ultraviolet (UV) light differs significantly. In the UV-A range, which is harmful to organic materials, rutile titanium dioxide has a much lower reflectivity and higher absorption rate of UV light compared to blue anatase. As a result, the organic resin surrounding rutile-based coatings is exposed to less UV radiation, offering better protection for the material. In industrial applications, rutile titanium dioxide is often used in high-end products such as coatings, white plastics, wood lacquers, and premium printing pastes. It provides excellent opacity, high gloss, and good dispersion properties, which help save time and effort during production. Manufacturers often consider cost when choosing between anatase and rutile, but rutile is typically reserved for more premium applications due to its superior performance. Anatase titanium dioxide, while less expensive, is still widely used in industries like plastics, inks, general printing pastes, and traditional paintings. It offers acceptable whiteness and is often processed through grinding or high-temperature techniques to enhance its performance. Despite its lower UV resistance, it remains a popular choice for cost-sensitive applications where high-quality aesthetics are not the primary concern.
