Japan develops ground charging technology for electric vehicles

According to the "Japan Economic News" on March 18th, a Japanese company called East Asia Road Industry Co., Ltd., which specializes in road pavement solutions, has developed an innovative paving technology that allows electric vehicles (EVs) to be charged while driving—without the need for a charging cable. This breakthrough uses non-contact power supply technology, where power coils are embedded directly into the road surface. As a result, EVs can charge both while moving and when stopped, making long-distance travel more feasible for electric cars.

The non-contact power supply system works by embedding a power coil beneath the road. When an electric vehicle passes over it, the magnetic field generated by the underground coil induces a current in the vehicle's own coil, allowing for wireless charging. This method not only improves convenience but also reduces the need for frequent stops at charging stations.

To ensure the durability of the power coils under the stress of traffic and heat, East Asia Road Industry has created a special elastic cement material. The coils can be buried as deep as 4 cm, making the installation process simple and cost-effective. Compared to traditional methods, this approach reduces construction costs by up to two-thirds, making it easier to retrofit existing roads with charging infrastructure.

This technology is currently being tested with electric vehicles supplied by Nissan Motors, and the company is aiming to bring the system to market as soon as possible. If successful, it could significantly change the future of electric mobility, reducing range anxiety and accelerating the adoption of EVs worldwide.
