How to turn the wallpaper yellow

Nowadays, the lifespan of general wallpaper can typically last around 10 years. However, over time, it's common for wallpaper to start yellowing due to various factors. After living in my new house for a few years, I noticed that the wallpaper had turned yellow, and I wanted to restore its original color based on the situation.

The yellowing of wallpaper can generally be categorized into a few different situations. One common cause is when the wall plaster isn't fully dry before applying the wallpaper. The alkaline substances in the wet plaster can react with the back of the wallpaper, causing discoloration. In such cases, the only effective solution is to remove the old wallpaper, let the wall dry completely, and then reapply new wallpaper.

Another frequent cause of yellowing is aging due to exposure to sunlight and air. This usually happens after several years of use. If you're facing this issue, you can try using a mild bleach solution. Apply it to a clean cloth and gently wipe the affected area. Let it sit for about 30 minutes, then rinse with water. It's important to test this method on a small, hidden section of the wall first to make sure there’s no damage or discoloration. If the results are satisfactory, you can proceed with treating the entire wall.

If the yellowing is caused by smoke residue, you can use a diluted solution of sodium hydroxide (commonly known as caustic soda) to wipe the affected areas. Be sure to wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated space when handling such chemicals.

In summary, the best way to deal with yellowed wallpaper depends on the underlying cause. Whether it's due to moisture, aging, or environmental factors, there are solutions available. Always test any cleaning method on a small area first, and if the problem is severe, consider replacing the wallpaper altogether for the best results.
