Walnut crafts

Walnut crafts are not only visually appealing but also highly collectible. If you're interested in learning how they're made, here's a step-by-step guide:

Raw Materials: Iron walnuts

Tools Needed: Tiger clip, hacksaw, and fine sandpaper

Production Steps:

  1. Start with iron walnuts from the Taihang Mountain area, known locally as "pecans." Remove the outer skin, wash them with water, and let them dry before use.
  2. Secure the dried pecans using a tiger clip, making sure to hold the head and tail ends. Then, cut them with a hacksaw at 3mm or 5mm from the middle of the walnut's belly.
  3. Once sliced, sand the pieces with fine sandpaper to remove any saw marks and ensure a smooth surface.
  4. Clean and dry the ground slices. They can then be assembled into various crafts or sold individually.

In Chinese culture, walnuts symbolize harmony and prosperity. The word for walnut, "heshi," sounds like "he" (peace) and "shi" (good fortune), representing family happiness, wealth, and long-lasting peace. As early as 1778, Emperor Qianlong used walnut products to "ward off evil spirits" and "bless peace," placing them on his shrine. In 1997, during the handover of Hong Kong, the central government presented walnut-made treasures as souvenirs to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Today, walnut crafts remain popular. Made from high-quality wild iron walnuts, these items make full use of the hard, corrosion-resistant shells and natural internal patterns. Through advanced techniques, the pulp is removed, and the walnuts are dried, shaped, sanded, glued, carved, and finished by hand—going through dozens of meticulous steps. There are over 50 types of products, including dining tables, desks, coffee tables, vases, ashtrays, table lamps, and tissue boxes. Each piece carries the meaning of "harmony and joy" and "prosperity and good fortune," forming a unique "nuclear beauty" series.

All walnut crafts preserve the original shape and pattern of the fruit, resulting in a simple yet elegant design with natural beauty and a hollowed-out effect. These high-end national handicrafts combine artistry, practicality, and collectibility. When packaged in exquisite gift boxes, they become the perfect choice for gifts, business relationships, home decor, and personal display.
