In 2012, the total output value of the national shipbuilding industry was nearly 800 billion yuan.

In the span of a full year, from January to December, the national shipbuilding industry completed 60.21 million deadweight tons (DWT), marking a significant year-on-year decline of 21.4%. Despite this drop in output, the overall industrial output value of large-scale shipbuilding enterprises reached 790.3 billion yuan, showing a modest growth of 3.4% compared to the previous year. Within that figure, the shipbuilding sector contributed 595.1 billion yuan, reflecting a slight decrease of 0.1% year-on-year. However, other segments of the industry performed better: the ship supporting industry saw an increase of 15.1%, reaching 113 billion yuan; the ship repair industry grew by 11.6%, totaling 18.1 billion yuan; and the ship modification industry recorded the strongest growth at 23.6%, amounting to 31.7 billion yuan. Looking specifically at December, the output of domestic civilian steel vessels dropped by 20.3% compared to the same month in the previous year. This marked a narrowing of the decline by 9 percentage points from the previous month. Additionally, the year-on-year growth rate for the entire year's output fell to 13.4%, which was 1.6 percentage points lower than the growth rate recorded in the first eleven months of the year. These figures suggest a continued slowdown in the shipbuilding sector, though some areas remain resilient and continue to show positive momentum.
