Baoding, Hebei strives to be a "solar city"

In a recent low-carbon development macroeconomic strategy seminar held in Guiyang, Baoding Mayor Ma Yufeng shared the city's ambitious efforts to transform into a "solar city." According to the mayor, major traffic intersections, main and secondary roads, as well as all parks and green areas in Baoding have already undergone solar energy upgrades. The city is now actively working towards becoming a model for renewable energy integration. Since 2006, Baoding has embedded the concept of "low-carbon" into its urban development strategy, focusing on building a new energy-driven industrial system. Today, the city has established six major industrial sectors, including photovoltaics, wind power, power transmission, energy storage, and automation. With over 200 companies involved in new energy, Baoding has earned the nickname "China Power Valley." The city has also implemented numerous low-carbon projects, achieving an annual energy consumption of 165 million kWh. This has led to a reduction of 66,000 tons of standard coal and 164,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. These achievements reflect Baoding’s commitment to sustainable growth and environmental protection. Leveraging the natural terrain of the Taihang Mountains—characterized by gentle slopes and low hills—Baoding has launched the Taihangshan New Energy Demonstration Zone. The city is also developing a "smoke-free city" by utilizing geothermal resources from areas like Xiongxi County. Additionally, it has participated in the National Golden Sun Project, promoting large-scale solar power generation initiatives. To further reduce emissions, Baoding has transitioned public transportation to gas, implementing a city-wide "gasification and security protection" project. Beyond infrastructure and industry, the city is also fostering a low-carbon lifestyle. Mayor Ma emphasized the importance of involving citizens in sustainability efforts. During this year’s World Environment Day on June 5th, Baoding hosted a "Cool China - Low-Carbon Life Enters the Community" exhibition, aiming to raise public awareness and encourage participation in eco-friendly practices. Looking ahead, Ma Yufeng stated that Baoding will continue to promote green industries, particularly in new energy and cultural tourism, while striving to build a city characterized by solar energy and ecological gardens. The city remains committed to accelerating its low-carbon transformation, ensuring a sustainable future for its residents.
