Wood painted parquet development prospects
In recent years, Hebei Baisian Artisan Wood Products Co., Ltd. has redefined the perception of flooring as a consumer good, introducing an innovative product that stands out in the market. The price per square meter of their painted parquet flooring now reaches 4,800 yuan, which is 12 times higher than the average of 400 yuan per square meter for standard flooring. How can flooring become a symbol of luxury? The answer lies in the art of wood-painted parquet, a unique and growing trend in the interior design world.
The price increase of 11 times may seem surprising, but it reflects the value added by integrating traditional Chinese painting techniques into flooring production. This fusion not only preserves cultural heritage but also elevates flooring from a functional item to a form of artistic expression. As a result, these floors are no longer just underfoot—they have become a canvas for art, making them highly sought after both domestically and internationally.
According to Guo Manfu, General Manager of the century-old craftsman company, this innovation has helped them move up the industry chain, escaping the low-end competition that once characterized the sector. By combining traditional culture with modern design, they have positioned themselves at the high end of the market. Their designs include famous original paintings, antique reproductions, and more—offering versatility beyond just flooring, as they can also be applied to walls and ceilings.
The concept of floor painting was initially met with curiosity, but it gained traction through exhibitions and events. Today, many people collect these pieces as valuable artworks, blending aesthetics with functionality. As cultural and creative industries gain momentum in China, more companies are exploring ways to integrate traditional elements into modern products.
Zhang Zhiguang, an associate professor at Hebei Normal University’s School of Fine Arts and Design, notes that floor painting offers a unique advantage over other art forms. Unlike rice paper, which is fragile, wooden floors are durable and long-lasting. This makes them ideal for spreading art in everyday life, offering a more accessible and practical way to enjoy high-quality artwork.
Another factor driving the rise in flooring prices is the scarcity of raw materials. With rare wood species becoming increasingly difficult to source, the cost of solid wood flooring has surged. Trees like rosewood, ebony, and agarwood take centuries to mature, and their limited availability has led to a "hard-to-find" phenomenon. As a result, these woods are becoming luxury items, accessible only to a select few.
While the utilization rate of wood has increased, and alternative materials like laminate and bamboo have reduced costs, the demand for premium solid wood continues to push prices upward. However, the high cost of raw materials and the need for strong financial backing make it challenging for many companies to maintain a high-end position in the market.
Guo Manji, another representative from the company, highlights that the main challenge remains production capacity. With a long manual process and plans to expand next year, the company aims to produce 190,000 square meters annually. Despite the challenges, the company remains committed to innovation, focusing on texture development and eco-friendly materials. They will continue using traditional hand-painting techniques rather than computer inkjet technology, preserving the core of their craft.
Their dedication to craftsmanship has earned them 37 national patents and made them the first case of intellectual property pledge in Hebei Province. This blend of tradition, innovation, and artistry ensures that their wooden parquet flooring remains a unique and valuable offering in the luxury market.
