The growth of sesame requires a balanced supply of nutrients, which cannot be fully met by base fertilizers alone, especially during the mid and late stages of flowering and pod formation. Based on the fertilizer demand pattern of sesame, the principle for top-dressing is to apply early seedling fertilizer, reapply before flowering, and provide additional nutrients at the flowering stage. Top-dressing should primarily focus on nitrogen, with phosphorus and potassium used as supplements. First, seedling stage top-dressing: The purpose of this application is to promote root development and strengthen seedlings. It is typically done after the plants have been transplanted. A recommended dose is between 37.5 to 52.5 kg of quick-release nitrogen fertilizer per hectare, or 22,500 to 30,000 kg of well-decomposed manure. If the soil is already rich and the base fertilizer is sufficient, the seedlings may not need much additional top-dressing. However, if the soil is poor or the sesame was planted late in the summer, it's important to apply the top-dressing earlier to ensure healthy growth. Second, flowering stage top-dressing: This can be applied once or twice depending on the condition of the crop. If the soil is already fertile, one application during the early flowering stage is usually enough. In less favorable conditions, it’s better to apply it earlier, ideally before full bloom. The typical dosage for this stage is 75 to 105 kg of urea per hectare, along with 30,000 to 37,500 kg of manure. Soil that lacks potassium can also benefit from applying 750 kg of wood ash at the early flowering stage, which significantly improves yield. Additionally, spraying a 0.2% solution of potassium dihydrogen phosphate from the beginning of the growing season until full bloom can enhance grain weight, oil content, and overall yield.
