Ukrainian scientists discover new forms of three-dimensional graphene

At present, known carbon allotropes include diamond, graphite, fullerenes, and carbon nanotubes. Recently researchers from the Kharkiv Institute of Cryogenic Physics and Technology in Ukraine have studied the synthesis of a new variant of carbon, a carbon honeycomb, which immediately attracted the attention of the world’s scientific community.

This variant is named as a carbon honeycomb because of its special shape, similar to honeycomb. The combination of low-temperature electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy combined with structural modeling shows that the substances they synthesized pass through the channels, and these channel walls are formed by graphene layers. The first samples of the carbon honeycombs were obtained in the form of a film with honeycomb channels forming a random grid. In order to obtain the regular cycle structure of fixed-size channels, further research on better synthesis control methods is needed in the future.

Ukrainian scientists discovered this structure has higher capacity and accumulated a large amount of inert gas (æ°ª, æ°™) and carbon dioxide. They found that this new structure of hydrogen storage far exceeds the theoretically attainable level of nanotubes. The characteristics of this new honeycomb structure are far more than these, and its unique function lies in the adaptability of the structure, that is, symbiosis with other carbon forms, using them as building materials or forming complex compound compounds. The fact that metal atoms or compound atoms fill the honeycomb channel gives the material its unique electrical and magnetic properties, all of which make it possible to apply honeycomb structures to a wide range of applications in microelectronics and nanoelectronics.

The research findings of Kharkiv researchers in Ukraine were published in the “Physical Review Letters” of the American Science Journal on February 5, 2016.
