Toyota turns to use artificial intelligence to develop new battery materials

Toyota has now turned to the use of artificial intelligence to find the latest advanced battery materials and fuel cell catalysts. The Toyota Research Institute (TRI) in California is investing $35 million in the project and has collaborated with research institutions and companies including MIT and Stanford University.

According to Toyota’s R&D department, material development can typically span decades. By using artificial intelligence techniques such as machine learning, researchers can reduce the amount of time it takes to develop new materials for future zero-emission, carbon-neutral vehicles.

Eric Krotkov, chief scientific officer of the Toyota Research Institute (TRI), said that Toyota recognizes that artificial intelligence is an important basic technology that can be applied in a range of industries and we can use it to expand the boundaries of materials science. We are very proud of this. Accelerating the pace of research and development of new materials will help lay the foundation for the use of clean energy, allowing the company to be closer to the vision of reducing the average global carbon dioxide emissions by 90% by 2050.

The performance of Prius, a hybrid vehicle in the market, has made Toyota a leader in environmentally friendly vehicle manufacturers. Toyota had announced that as of January this year, it had sold 10 million hybrid vehicles. Although Toyota may sell new materials developed by the project to its competitors, the company has been planning to expand its eco-friendly models. Toyota spent a long time developing fuel cell powered vehicles and announced last year that it was building its first pure electric vehicle.
