Plate selection knowledge

Many consumers choose large core boards based on weight or price, but they often don't realize that the heavier the board, the lower the quality. This is because a heavier board usually means it's made from more wood, which can lead to poor structural integrity and even be unsuitable for use. Boards made from mixed woods without proper reinforcement are especially unreliable. Blockboard, also known as large core board, is widely used in home decoration due to its excellent moisture resistance. It's constructed by bonding natural wood strips together, with thin veneer on both sides. This makes it ideal for furniture, wooden doors, cabinet panels, and more. Compared to particleboard and MDF, blockboard offers better waterproof performance. When selecting, ensure the internal wood strips are not broken and the gaps between them are around 3mm. Due to the rough surface, it’s rarely painted directly and is often covered with plywood instead. The process of using adhesive sheets and painting increases the cost significantly. Blockboards come in 3-ply, 5-ply, and 9-ply options, with thickness affecting the price. It’s important to note that very cheap blockboards are often of poor quality. They may contain unqualified wood or have small gaps, making them unsuitable for real use. A good option is to choose blockboards priced around 100 yuan, which tend to be more stable in quality. Avoid those priced below 50-55 yuan, as they are likely to be substandard. When choosing a blockboard, check the appearance: one side should be a whole panel, while the other may have a slight seam. The surface should be clean and dry. To inspect the internal quality, cut a corner and check the wood strips. Gaps larger than 5mm or the presence of bark, knots, or insect damage are signs of low quality. High-quality blockboards feature a zigzag joint design for better strength. In terms of usage, blockboards should only be laid along the long side and not horizontally. They should not be used as a panel directly; instead, a layer of plywood should be added to prevent issues like paint blistering. Another material worth considering is laminated wood, which is less prone to warping. Made from high-quality imported logs, this type of board uses a staggered stitching process. It has better environmental performance, emitting only 1/8 of the formaldehyde found in blockboards. At around 200 yuan per sheet, it’s slightly more expensive than premium blockboards but allows direct painting, saving a step in the process and potentially balancing the overall cost. MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) differs from particleboard in nail-holding strength. While MDF is flat and smooth, it lacks moisture resistance and is not ideal for cabinets. Its weak structure can cause screws to loosen over time, making it less popular for furniture. Veneer plywood, also known as three-ply or multi-layer board, is affordable and commonly used in home decor. It comes in various thicknesses and is typically priced between 10-20 yuan per 4m board. Factory-prepared veneer plywood includes a thin layer of real wood, making it easy to work with and more cost-effective than buying veneer separately. Melamine-faced boards are durable, water-resistant, and fire-resistant, making them suitable for furniture and cabinets. They range in price from 80 to 140 yuan per 4m sheet. Veneer is a thin layer of real wood, available in various colors and wood types such as cherry, maple, oak, and rosewood. It's often used for decorative finishes and requires careful handling when applied individually. For large-scale projects, it's best to purchase pre-finished veneer plywood. If a unique look is needed, a higher level of craftsmanship is required. Moisture content plays a crucial role in wood stability. Wood with a moisture level higher than the surrounding environment will shrink, while lower levels may cause expansion. Cracking and warping often result from improper moisture balance. Qualified wood undergoes high-temperature drying to stabilize its moisture content, making it essential to choose properly treated materials. Experts advise against choosing the cheapest options, as they may contain substandard materials and excessive formaldehyde. It's safer to buy from reputable markets and opt for branded products. Since wood is a major component in home decoration, it's wise to consult professionals or let your contractor handle the purchase. They often have reliable suppliers and clear responsibility in case of quality issues.
