Wood painted parquet development prospects
In recent years, Hebei Baisian Artisan Wood Products Co., Ltd. has redefined the perception of flooring as a basic building material, turning it into a high-end art form. The price per square meter now reaches 4,800 yuan—12 times higher than the average market price of 400 yuan. How can flooring become luxurious? The answer lies in the rising trend of "wood-painted parquet," an artistic flooring concept that blends traditional Chinese painting techniques with modern design.
This unique flooring style has captured attention not just for its visual appeal but also for its cultural significance. By incorporating elements like classical Chinese paintings, antique reproductions, and traditional craftsmanship, wood-painted parquet has transformed floors from mere functional surfaces into cultural artifacts. It's not only used for flooring but also finds application on walls and ceilings, expanding its creative potential.
According to Guo Manfu, the general manager of the century-old craftsman company, the success of this product comes from combining traditional culture with modern innovation. “By integrating traditional painting techniques such as embedding, branding, carving, and painting into floor production, we’ve created a new market space,†he explains. This approach has allowed the company to move away from low-end competition and enter the high-end segment of the industry.
The rise of wood-painted parquet has also sparked interest in the art world. Zhang Zhiguang, an associate professor at Hebei Normal University’s School of Fine Arts and Design, highlights that floor painting offers a more accessible way to bring art into daily life. Compared to expensive collectibles, painted floors are more practical and have greater potential for widespread appreciation.
Another key factor driving the luxury status of wood flooring is the scarcity of raw materials. As rare wood species like rosewood, agarwood, and ebony become increasingly difficult to source, their prices continue to climb. Some species are even facing a "sourcing crisis" due to their slow growth and ancient origins. With these woods taking over a century to mature, they have become highly sought after by collectors and designers alike.
While the overall cost of flooring materials like laminate and bamboo has decreased, the price of solid wood flooring is still on the rise. Industry sources predict that it may soon become a luxury item, accessible only to a select few. This trend is also shaping the competitive landscape of the flooring industry, where only a few companies can truly establish themselves in the high-end market.
For many manufacturers, the challenge lies in maintaining financial strength. Since wood accounts for over 70% of production costs, strong capital support is essential. Companies that lack this advantage often struggle to keep up with the demands of large-scale inventory and rapid capital flow.
Guo Manji, another representative of the company, points out that the main issue today is production capacity. While manual production remains a key part of the process, the company plans to expand next year to reach an annual output of 190,000 square meters. Innovation remains central to their strategy, with efforts focused on improving texture and introducing eco-friendly materials. However, they remain committed to traditional hand-painting techniques, as they believe this is what gives their product its unique value.
With 37 national patents and a first-of-its-kind intellectual property pledge in Hebei Province, the company is setting a new standard in the industry. As demand grows and materials become scarcer, the future of wood-painted parquet looks promising—not just as a product, but as a symbol of cultural heritage and artistic expression.
