Changhua Tianhuang Identification Criteria:

1. To accurately identify Changhua Tianhuang, it is essential to analyze its mineral composition using infrared spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. This method helps determine if the mineral is composed of dikai (dickite) and kaolinite, or a transitional form between the two. These are key indicators for authenticating Changhua Tianhuang. However, not all stones made from dikai or kaolinite can be considered as Changhua Tianhuang.

The primary minerals found in Changhua Tianhuang are kaolinite, dickite, and their transitional forms. Importantly, there should be no presence of perlite. In contrast, Shoushan Tianhuang typically lacks both kaolinite and perlite, making this a significant distinction between the two types of stones.

2. Tianhuang stones are characterized by six specific qualities: fine texture, knot-like patterns, warmth, moisture, a condensed feel, and a greasy surface. These features are important for identification. Additionally, they should display four major macroscopic characteristics: stone shape, stone skin, ribbing, and either plaid or red grid patterns.

3. It’s crucial to be cautious of imitations such as chlorite, pyrophyllite, gypsum, and talc-based stones that may be dyed or artificially treated to mimic the appearance of real yellowstone. Fake skins and other deceptive techniques are commonly used to pass off inferior stones as authentic.

4. While Shoushan Tianhuang has been largely mined out, Changhua Tianhuang represents a newly discovered source of high-quality yellowstone in China. This discovery holds great theoretical and practical importance, and it deserves more attention from collectors and researchers alike.
