Brief Introduction to the Development Status of Domestic Blow Molding Machine
Blow molding is a widely used technique for manufacturing hollow thermoplastic products, such as tubular films and containers. The process involves heating a preformed plastic piece and then blowing it into a mold to shape the final product. This method is particularly popular in the production of high-speed and high-volume PET and BOPP bottles, typically using a two-step process. Alternatively, blow molding can be combined with injection molding to create a blow-in-blowing machine, commonly used for PET container production. Another variation integrates extrusion with blow molding, allowing for greater material flexibility and a wider range of products, including multi-layer films and various polyolefin containers. These are extensively used in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.
For hollow container production, both one-step and two-step blow molding methods are commonly applied. The two-step approach is ideal for centralized preform production and decentralized bottle manufacturing, while the one-step method suits online production by beverage companies. In China, two-step equipment is mainly used by specialized PET bottle manufacturers, whereas one-step machines are preferred by large beverage brands like Master Kong and Wahaha.
PET bottle blow molding machines are categorized into rotary and straight types based on how the preforms are heated and transported. Rotary machines offer higher productivity and speed, though they are more complex and costly. France's SIDEL SBO series, for example, can produce over 20,000 bottles per hour. Linear machines, like Japan’s ASB and AOKI models, are simpler in design but have lower throughput, typically under 6,000 bottles per hour.
Precise temperature control is essential for uniform plasticization, directly affecting product quality. Mold and hot runner design also play a critical role in determining the final outcome.
Currently, most injection-blowing equipment used in China for PET bottle production is imported, especially for high-speed and large-volume operations. Domestic equipment still lags behind in this area. Only a few manufacturers, such as ASB, have successfully developed large-capacity PET hot-fill bottle machines.
With the rise of cold aseptic filling technology, a new phase in the blow molding machine market is emerging. While SIPA's one-step machines have gained a strong presence in facilities like Beijing Huiyuan Juice Factory, two-step systems still hold potential in certain applications.
Extrusion blow molding equipment is more versatile, capable of processing materials like PE, PS, PVC, and PC. It accounts for about three-quarters of all blow-molded products. This method can produce everything from small eye drop bottles to large 1,000L trays and even ton-sized drums.
China's extrusion blow molding equipment has reached a satisfactory level. For instance, Yaqi offers a full range of machines that can produce containers up to 200L, and has even developed in-mold labeling extrusion blow molding machines, which are widely used in cosmetics and lubricant industries.
