Japan Clockwork Develops New Power Seat

The Japanese company developed a power seat that can use a single motor to move the seat up and down to change the angle of the backrest. Its characteristics are light and cheap. Plans to begin accepting orders in 2016.

For an ordinary electric seat to achieve the same adjustment, three motors are required. Japan's development of this product is lighter than the average seat by more than 10%, and the cost is lower.

This electric seat is realized by a combination of four main mechanisms (see the following figure), which are a knob, a clutch mechanism, a motor mechanism and a torque cable mechanism which are manually operated. There are three torque cable mechanisms that transmit the motor driving force, which correspond to the adjustment of three directions.

Among them, the clutch mechanism is of vital importance, and this mechanism serves to connect or separate the three twisting mechanism and the motor mechanism. First, turn the knob on the side of the seat by hand. At this time, the clutch mechanism can move up and down to select the cable mechanism corresponding to the target motion. The selected twisted cable mechanism meshes with the motor mechanism through the gears, and the driving force can be transmitted to the forward and backward movement of the seat surface through the twisted cable.

The up and down movement of the clutch mechanism is achieved by meshing the pinion mounted on the knob with the rack of the clutch mechanism. The reason why the twist-twist mechanism can be selected is that there is a small groove in the outline of the flat-type clutch mechanism, and there is always one end of the cable mechanism caught in the groove. When one pin is embedded in the ditch, the other two are separated from the ditch. In addition to the resin pin embedded in the groove, the end of the twist cable mechanism also has a bevel gear. When the pin is embedded in the groove, the bevel gear meshes with the bevel gear on the motor side, and the driving force of the motor can be transmitted to the twisted cable. The twisted cable mechanism is always pressed against the clutch mechanism by a spring. The bevel gears do not mesh when the pin is out of the groove.

This electric seat has the advantages of light weight and low cost, but the disadvantage is that it only supports 3 levels of adjustment. Recently, more and more high-end cars adopt four-step adjustment power seats. In addition to the seat surface and the front and back movements, the backrest is lifted up and down, and the front side of the seat can be moved up and down. The Japanese clockwork will be marketed to automakers, and will be equipped with such models as low-price small cars and light-duty vehicles currently equipped with manual seats.
