By comparing the adsorption effects of activated carbon on volatiles and organic matter, the following conclusions are drawn:
Activated carbon has a great difference in the adsorption of volatile organic compounds and extractable organic matter. With the increase of molecular weight, the adsorption effect of volatile organic compounds is better, and the organic matter can be extracted with the decrease of molecular weight, and the adsorption effect is better. This is mainly because volatile organic compounds are mainly organic substances with relatively small polarities, while extractable organic substances are relatively polar organic substances. Activated carbon itself can be regarded as a non-polar adsorbent, and non-polar substances in water. The adsorption capacity is greater than the adsorption capacity of the polar substance. Moreover, when the size of the adsorbed molecules is proportional to the activated carbon, it is most favorable for adsorption. For molecules with less polarity, the larger the molecular weight, the better the adsorption.
Main conclusions: Activated carbon has a very strong competition for the adsorption of various organic substances in water. The amount of adsorption of various organic substances is not only related to the molecular structure of organic matter, but also related to the amount of organic matter in water. At the same time, for volatile organic compounds and extractable organics, their adsorption amount on activated carbon is completely opposite to the molecular weight. The extractable organic matter decreases with the increase of molecular weight, while the adsorption performance of volatile organic compounds increases with the increase of molecular weight.
